Concept:
History is polished through erosion. Every moment carries a new form and remains part of what has passed, receiving unpredictable new life through the slow drift of time. Sound. Flow. Time. compresses traces of the past and sends them toward the future, becoming a future past and a future archaeology.
This work weaves together layers of sound from both history and the present: local Xinjiang folk elements, Western symphonic fragments (Mahler Symphony No. 1) as symbols of external cultural influence, desert stones and wind, quarry noise from the site, spontaneous vocal traces, camel footsteps, lizard movements, market echoes, ancient ocean waves, human breath crossing the Gobi, delicate raindrops, and a deliberately empty track that stands for cosmic rotation. There is no audible sound in this track, yet it marks events that unfold in silence and still exist in time.
The piece is constructed by stacking all tracks into a sonic mass that resembles a fortress, a mountain, a stratigraphy echoing the exhibition’s theme of layers. During playback, tracks are gradually and randomly removed, mirroring industrial extraction. Each moment becomes singular and unrepeatable, shaped by temporal flow. The audience never hears the same formation twice. What remains in the end is not predetermined, and only time will reveal it.
Cover Design Concept:
The cover features the recording device set against the Gobi Desert at sunset. Countless screenshots capturing fleeting moments of the sunset are layered and collaged, while certain fragments are randomly removed, evoking extraction and archaeology. The cover itself becomes a still manifestation of Sound. Flow. Time., holding the work’s temporal and geological gestures in a single frame.
